Our guide to New Zealand's best places - Queenstown

Queenstown is a thrill seekers paradise, particularly for adventurous types with cash to spend. Over the winter season (June to August in New Zealand) the Southern Alps provides perfect conditions for skiing or snowboarding, while visitors in warmer months can enjoy almost endless activities, including jetboating, skydiving, ziplining and bungy jumping. AJ Hackett call themselves the home of the bungy for good reason, as this pioneering company invented the sport back in the extravagant 80s, when two crazy kiwi guys decided that jumping off tall objects with a cord around their ankles might be fun.

If you prefer activities less likely to induce heart palpitations or vomiting, then a trip down the Luge, stroll round the waterfront Arts 'n' Crafts Market or a relaxing cruise across Lake Wakatipu on the TSS Earnslaw could be more your cup of tea.

As we eluded to earlier Queenstown is not a budget destination, but the scenery is guaranteed to take your breath away. The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy was filmed here, and a visit to Queenstown will show you why. Seemingly all service and tourism workers in the town are on working holidays, and if you are considering New Zealand as a working holiday destination and don't mind sharing a house, then waking up to magnificent views and adventure tourism at your doorstep is not a bad way to spend your time.

One money saving tip is to sample a Fergburger. Ed Sheeran described this iconic burger establishment as offering "by far the best burger in the world". Their mouth-watering creations use fresh delicious New Zealand ingredients, which make them well-worth the 20-30 minute wait. They might not be the cheapest burgers in town, but they will leave you so full that you probably won't be tempted to spend any more money on food for the rest of the day.

We also recommend a scenic drive to the nearby town of Wanaka. It takes about an hour or longer if you pause for selfies at one of many rest stops with spectacular mountain views along the way. Once you reach your destination you can chill on the beach or sip coffee in a local cafe.
